- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
Rhode Island Greening is an old heirloom variety that is medium to large, yellowish-green with some sun blushing and a pale dots. It is quite tart, crisp, and juicy. It is an excellent cooking and drying apple, but can be eaten fresh if tree ripened. The tree is vigorous and spreading and it is productive. It is a triploid, so requires pollinators from other varieties. Ripens in mid to late season.
RI Greening has been known since 1650 and was once a popular commercial variety in many eastern states. It originated in Rhode Island of course! It is really no longer grown by commercial orchardists and Grandpa barely remembers it!
