McIntosh Apple- Spur type
Malus domestica 'Spur Red McIntosh'
- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
Grandpa's Choice™ Spur Red McIntosh is similar to our regular Mac in all ways except tree habit. Spur Red McIntosh is much more spurry and more compact.
Many varieties of apples are very vigorous and "rangey", meaning that the trees will grow tall and with a big spread. Sometimes the limbs will bear fruit only on the tips and maybe a few natural spurs. "Spur" varieties, on the other hand, are genetic sports or mutations that are like the original in fruit character, but the growth habit is changed with the addition of many more fruiting spurs. Grandpa often recommended spur-type trees to his commercial fruit growers because they were more efficient producers.
Spur Red McIntosh is a good choice for backyard growers who have less space to a lot for a McIntosh tree. It sets more spurs and will be less "rangy" than regular Red McIntosh.
