Red Astrachan Apple
Malus domestica 'Red Astrachan'
- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
Red Astrachan is a small to medium sized apple with a pale creamy skin striped with red and covered with a heavy bloom. The white flesh is sometimes striped with red, and is excellent for eating. It is tart and an excellent cooking, sauce and pie apple. Does not store long. The tree is productive but can be biennial. Ripens very early in July and through to September.
Red Astrachan is a Russian apple that made its way to America via Sweden and England in 1835.
Many heirloom varieties have some natural resistance to apple scab and other diseases, since they were often discovered and grown well before fruit growers started to use chemicals for disease control. However, you may still want to be vigilant about fire blight, apple scab, and other fungal diseases and spray when the need arises. Protect from insect damage like normal.
