Northern Lights produces large, attractive, glossy, bright red blushed apples. It has a flavor similar to McIntosh and with semi-firm, tasty white flesh.. It is very cold hardy and best suited to back yard orchards in cold climates. It ripens near McIntosh season and will keep a few months in cold storage.
Northern Lights was bred in Geneva, New York and extensively tested in North Dakota. It was a Harelson X McIntosh cross made in 1938 and selected in 1947. However it was not released to the public until 1990.
Northern lights cross pollinates well with most other varieties.
