Hunge is an excellent mild flavored, juicy fruit for cooking, drying or fresh eating. A large, red fruit that is covered with a russet netting. It is one of the few apple varieties that will grow well in coastal plain areas, regions that are usually inhospitable to apple growing.
Hunge is believed to originate in the 1700's in North Carolina and appeared in many North Carolina nursery catalogs until about 1905. It was rediscovered and saved in 1986 by Gertrude Morris in Newton Grove, North Carolina.
Ripens August to September, depending on location.
