Gala-Original Strain Apple

Malus domestica 'Gala-Original Kidd's D-8'
  • Summary
  • Hardiness Zone & More

The origial Gala strain to come into the US is known as Kidd's D-8 now.  It produces medium sized fruit with striping on a golden yellow-orangish skin that is distinctive.  The fruit is crisp, dense, aromatic and white with an subacid, sweet-tart flavor that keeps you coming back for more.  Gala is now one of the most popular apples in the world.  Ripens in early to mid-September and it stores will.  Very productive and should be thinned well for good size.

Alternate Name:  Stark Gala, Kidd's D-8 cultivar, Original Gala

Kidd's D-8 cultivar was bred in New Zealand in 1934 and was introduced into the US in 1965.  Its parents are Cox's Orange Pippin and Golden Delicious.  Gala revolutionized the apple industry and is now taking the place of the notable Red Delicious as one of the world's favorite apples.

All Gala strains are precocious, heavy producers.  Thin well to the "king bloom" apple for best size.  Susceptible to fire blight and scab so protection is needed.  Pollinates easily with most other mid-season bloomers.  An easy tree to work with.
