Seckel Pear
Pyrus communis 'Seckel'
- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
Seckel is commonly called a Sugar Pear and although it isn't the prettiest fruit, it is one of the best quality dessert pears. It is small and yellowish brown with fine grained, smooth, and extremely sweet juicy flesh. It has a distinctive, spicy, rich, aromatic flavor and is also ideal for pickling, spicing and canning whole. This fruit ripens in September and the trees are productive, slow growing and reliable.
Introduced from Europe in 1790. Seckel pears were planted up and down the road where Grandpa's farm was, because they were easy to take care of and pretty in the spring.
Seckel pears are one of the easiest to grow. The trees are very productive and spurry, and seem quite reistant to fire blight and other pear diseases.
