Niitaka Asian Pear

Pyrus pyrifolia 'Niitaka'
  • Summary
  • Hardiness Zone & More

Niitaka Asian Pear is heavily russeted with an orange brown color.  It has excellent size.  The fruit is juicy and sweet, and has more texture than most other asian pears.  It will keep in storage for up to four months.  The tree is more spurry and dense growing than other pears.

Unfortuately Grandpa doesn't know his foreign languages very well, so he doesn't know what Niitaka means in its home country--- darn!

Niitaka is one of the larger asian pears.  If it needs to be thinned, we suggest you clip or cut the stems when thinning or harvesting, since they will not "pop" off the limb like regular pears.  Asian pears in general seem to have less problems with pear diseases than most pears.  The trees are vigorous and upright growing.
