Clapp's Favorite Pear
Pyrus communis 'Clapp's Favorite'
- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
Clapp's Favorite Pear is very large, elongated, long-necked fruit that is green colored when immature, but ripens to a lemony yellow. It's white flesh is fine-grained, very sweet and highly flavored - great for dessert, fesh eating and canning. Trees are strong, sturdy, very hardy and vigorous..
Clapp's Favorite is an old variety that Grandpa used to grow because it was one of the first pears to harvest for the market in the summer. It is very good in its season, but won't store worth a darn!
Clapp's Favorite is quite easy to grow as it is very productive, but it is highly susceptible to fire blight, so do not over prune or fertilize. Harvest fruit when the skin color is starting to change from green to light green-yellow. Waiting too long will result in soft fruit, short storage, and lots of dropped fruit.
