Sugar Prune Plum (European)
Prunus domestica 'Sugar'
- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
Sugar Prune is an old-timey European prune. It is only medium size, with reddish purple fruit and greenish yellow flesh. It gets its name by being so sweet and highly flavored when ripe.
Sugar prune was sometimes called German prune by Grandpa's ancestors who came from Germany, where is originated. It may be the source of the stories about the "sugar plum fairies".
Sugar prune is self-fruitful. However, it tends to be biennial, setting large crops one season and small ones the next. Thinning might help improve size on the "on" years and possibly help reduce stress on the trees so it will set more fruit the next.
