Opalescent is a large fruited apple with smooth skin that is completely red, turning to carmine or purplish.  The fruit is firm, juicy, mildly subacid with yellow flesh.  It t ripens in late fall.  The skin becomes greasy in storage.

Alternate Name:  Hudson's Pride

Opalescent was discovered in Michigan by George Hudson, who originally called it Hudson's Pride.  It was introduced in 1880 and the name changed to Opalescent by the nursery.  It was once widely grown in New England because of its attractiveness.

Many heirloom varieties have some natural resistance to apple scab and other diseases, since they were often discovered and grown well before fruit growers started to use chemicals for disease control.  However, you may still want to be vigilant about fire blight, apple scab, and other fungal diseases and spray when the need arises.  Protect from insect damage like normal.
