King David Apple
Malus domestica 'King David'
- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
King David produces dark red fruit over a greenish background color. The fruit is medium sized, firm, crisp, spicy, juicy, yellow fleshed and is very flavorful. It is good for all uses from cider to sauce, pies, and eating. It is a late ripening variety but never seems to drop. Pick when fully red colored. Resistant to fire blight.
King David was found in a fence row near Durham, Arkansas in 1893. It is thought to be a cross of Jonathan X either Winesap or Arkansas Black. It was widely grown in the midwest.
Many heirloom varieties have some natural resistance to apple scab and other diseases, since they were often discovered and grown well before fruit growers started to use chemicals for disease control. However, you may still want to be vigilant about fire blight, apple scab, and other fungal diseases and spray when the need arises. Protect from insect damage like normal.
