Sam Dark Sweet Cherry

Prunus avium 'Sam'

Sam is a medium large, firm, jet-black sweet cherry that blooms later than most sweet cherries so it may escape any late spring frosts. Pollinate with Bing, Montmorency, Royal Ann, Stella or Van, as it is self-unfruitful. Would make an good pollinator for other sweet cherries though.

Prunus avium 'Sam'
Homeowner Growing and Maintenance Tips

A large, vigorous, hardy upright and spreading tree with a desirable framework. Self-unfruitful, but a good pollinator to other sweet cherries. Pollinate with Bing, Montmorency, Royal Ann, Stella or Van. Shows some resistance to canker and cracking. Sweet cherries are attractive to birds, so netting will help keep them off the fruit. Covering the tree with plastic sheeting during rains may help in reducing fruit cracking. Copper sprays during the dormant season will help reduce bacterial cankers on the bark.
