Red Stayman is a real old time variety that is still very popular in the south. It is a medium to large apple with a tart, rich, wine-like flavor. The fruit is a dull red, and the skin is often rather rough, not taking a real shine like most apples. It ripens late in the season and is an excellent keeper. Most people like it for baking and cider, but other like its unique flavor as a dessert apple.

Stayman was discovered in Kansas in 1895 as a seedling of Winesap. It originally was a dull stripy red apple on greenish background, but over the years, many new strains have appeared that have better color, less roughness, and less cracking. Our Red Stayman is well colored and retains the characteristic somewhat rough skin and cracks less than most.
