- » Redfree Apple is one of Grandpa's Favorite disease resistant varieties.
Grandpa's Nature Friendly™ Redfree is an excellent tasting, summer apple with a lot of disease resistance. It is a good choice for the backyard orchard where you don't want to have to spray a lot. The fruit is medium sized, red, with some striping with sweet, tasty, white flesh. Ripens mid to late in the summer, after Pristine(R)
Redfree was introduced from Purdue University in Indiana in 1981. It came from the same program that has given us all the other good Co-op apples.
Redfree is immune to apple scab and cedar apple rust, and has good resistance to fire blight and mildew. It is one of the few apples that seems to have a natural resistance to European red mites. The tree is a little "rangy" and will have more "blind wood" that does'nt show fruiting spurs than other varieties, so don't over trim it--- let it fruit.
