Molly's Delicious Apple
Malus domestica 'Molly's Delicious'
- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
Molly's Delicious is not a true Red Delicious, but is very similar in appearance and flavor. It ripens almost three or more weeks ahead with Gala and McIntosh. It is large and conic with about one half red blush over a yellow background. It has a very pleasing flavor and will keep quite well for several weeks.
Molly's Delicious was introduced from New Jersey in 1966. Back in those days, long term controlled atmosphere storage of Red Delicious was in its infancy and so Red Delicious type apples were not available "year-round" like they are today. Grandpa liked Molley's for the market because they were ready well before any true Red Delicious, but looked and ate like the old strains back then.
Molly's Delicious is a an early blooming variety and should be pollinated with similar blooming varieties. The tree is somewhat vigorous, fairly productive and somewhat spreading. It can tend to bear biennially.
