Hawkeye Original Delicious Apple
Malus domestica 'Delicious-Hawkeye'
- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
Hawkeye is the original Red Delicious apple that revolutionized the apple world when discovered. The fruit is large, conical, with smooth yellowish skin striped red. The flesh is delicious and has a sweet distinct flavor that cannot be matched by newer strains of Red Delicious. It is a unique experience.
Alternate Name: Original Delicious, Standard Delicious, Hiatt Original Delicious
Hawkeye got its current name because it originated in Iowa, the Hawkeye State, in the 1880 on the farm of Jesse Hiatt who planted seeds of Yellow Bellflower apple. It was picked up and promoted by the Stark Brothers Nursery and re-named Delicious because of its unique flavor. Over the past 100 years it has produced many, many "sports" which typically are redder and more beautiful, however the original "Delicious" flavor cannot be matched by these sports.
Hawkeye is susceptible to scab, but shows some resistance to fire blight and cedar apple rust.
