Malus domestica 'Albemarle Pippen'
  • Summary
  • Hardiness Zone & More

Albemarle Pippen is not the most beautiful apple in the world, but has a rich, juicy flaor with a piney tartness. It is medium to large and has excellent dessert quality. The fruit is green, breaking to light yellow when ripe. It ripens late in the season, just ahead of Granny Smith.  It is often known as Newtown Pippin or Yellow Newtown.

Apparently Albemarle or Newtown Pippen was George Washington's favorite apple. It originated in Newtown, Long Island, New York in 1759.

Newtown or Yellow Pippen is vigorous, spreading tree. It should be pollinated with late to late-mid season blooming varieties. Tends to bear biennially.
