Winesap Red Apple
Malus domestica 'Winesap - Red'
- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
Grandpa's Choice™ Red Winesap is an old-time favorite in many places. It is a medium size, dark red apple that is great for cooking and cider because of its aromatic fragrance and rich, spicy flavor. Must have been called winesap for a reason. Trees are resistant to fireblight and ripens mid-October to early November.
Winesap is an old variety dating from the early 1800s.
Winesap is a medium size apple at best, so good thinning is required for better size. Winesap is not a good pollinator for other varieties. It blooms early and should be pollinated by other early season bloomers.
