The Virginia Beauty is a very large, deep red fruit that is colored like a Jonathan but brighter red and globe-shaped, often lopsided. Its flesh is very crisp with a sweet, mildly subacid flavor.
Virginia Beauty was discovered as a chance seedling on the property of Zach Safewright in Carrol County, Virginia in 1826 and many local growers began grafting it as Zach or Zach Red until it was given its offical name in the 1850's. Introduced commercially in 1910.
Ripens in mid-October to February. Good keeper.
