Grimes Golden is an excellent, medium sized bright golden yellow apple with fine, crisp, yellow flesh. It has an aromatic, spicy flavor that is distinctive. It is good for all uses except for baking. An excellent keeper into the winter. The trees are moderately vigorous, precocious and consistent yearly bearer. Considered self-fertile. Ripens in mid-season in September thru October.
Alternate names: Bellflower, Grimes, Grimes Golden Pippin
Grimes Golden has been around since the early 1800s and was often boated down the rivers from West Virginia, where it originated, and other states to New Orleans.
Many heirloom varieties have some natural resistance to apple scab and other diseases, since they were often discovered and grown well before fruit growers started to use chemicals for disease control. However, you may still want to be vigilant about fire blight, apple scab, and other fungal diseases and spray when the need arises. Protect from insect damage like normal.
