Golden Russet of widely considered to be one of the best cider varieties because of its excellent flavored, sugary juice. It also is good for drying, fresh eating and cooking. The medium sized fruit has crisp, juicy, finely textured yellow flesh and greenish yellow to bronzy russeted skin. It is an excellent keeper that can last in proper storage will into the Spring. It is ripens in October.
Alternate Name: English Golden Russet
The origin of Golden Russet is a mystery except that it originated in New York well before 1845. It was widely grown because of its many uses and excellent keeping qualities.
Golden Russet is scab resistant and pests do not seem to bother it very much. It would be an excellent heirloom variety for the backyard gardener who wants an apples with many uses.
