Centennial Edible Flowering Crabapple
Malus domestica 'Centennial Crab'
- Summary
- Hardiness Zone & More
Centennial Crab is a very hardy, edible crab that can beautify the yard also. It is a compact grower that produces small, crisp, juicy edible crabs that are sweet and nutty flavored about 1.5 inches in diameter. It ripens in mid-August and is an excellent pollinizer for other apples, bearing heavy loads of red flower buds that open into white blossoms. Good for eating, canning and jelly. It is highly scab resistant.
Centennial Crab was bred and introduced in 1957 by the University of Minnesota, where many high quality hardy apples originated.
Ornamental crab apples are often used for pollination in commercial orchards because they are typically compact trees that produce lots of blossoms and "hot" pollen. Often the fruits are small and mediocre, but some are highly prized for their eating qualities also.
