Malus domestica Dorsett Golden - Dorsett Golden Apple

Dorsett Golden Apple

Malus domestica 'Dorsett Golden'

Dorsett Golden is especially suited for warm climates where chilling hours are hard to get.  It requires only 100 or more chilling hours below 45 degreesF to grow.  It is apparently self-fertile, but the seeds may not develop.  It is very similar in growth habit to Golden Delicious and quite easy to grow.  The fruit is golden yellow, medium sized, fairly crisp and suitable for most uses.  Grandpa does not recommend it for northern zones as low-chill varieties can tend to break dormancy too early in the spring.

Dorsett Golden was grown from a Golden Delicious seed planted by Mrs Irene Dorsett in the Bahamas.  It was introduced into the US in 1961.

Dorsett Golden has many of the same characteristics as its parent Golden Delicious, but is most known for its low chilling hour requirement which makes it suitable to grown in very warm climate.
