Dapple Dandy Pluot(R)
Prunus hybrid-Pluot(R) 'Dapple Dandy'
Dapple Dandy Pluot(R) is an inter-specific hybrid. It has sweet, flavorful and firm dark red flesh. It ripens in the mid-season before Stanley plum time. It should be pollinated with another plumcot or Japanese plum. Requires 500-700 chilling hours. It has reddish-purple skin color and red flesh. The tree is vigorous, open, and spreading.
Apriums(R) and Pluots(R) are trademarks of Floyd Zaiger of California, who is one of the pioneers in making what are called inter-specific crosses in the Prunus genus. While some of these crosses happen naturally, almost all of the important ones have to be specifically bred by crossing, re-crossing, and back-crossing plums, peaches, apricots, nectarines and other species in the Prunus genus. It is a time consuming project, but many interesting cultivars have resulted from his and his family's hard work. The resulting varieties often have very interesting and distinct flavors combining the flavors and qualities of these different stone fruits.
