Prunus hybrid-Pluot(R) Flavor Heart - Flavor Heart Pluot(R)

Flavor Heart Pluot(R)

Prunus hybrid-Pluot(R) 'Flavor Heart'

Flavor Heart Pluot(R) is an inter-specific hybrid.  It has sweet, flavorful and firm yellow flesh, without tartness.  It ripens late in the season  between Stanley and President plum time.  It should be pollinated with another plumcot or Japanese plum.  Requires 500-700 chilling hours.  It has very dark reddish-purple skin color and yellow flesh.  The fruit will ripen quickly on the tree so should be harvested in a timely manner.  The tree is semi-vigorous, upright and early bearing.

Apriums(R) and Pluots(R) are trademarks of Floyd Zaiger of California, who is one of the pioneers in making what are called inter-specific crosses in the Prunus genus.  While some of these crosses happen naturally, almost all of the important ones have to be specifically bred by crossing, re-crossing, and back-crossing plums, peaches, apricots, nectarines and other species in the Prunus genus.  It is a time consuming project, but many interesting cultivars have resulted from his and his family's hard work.  The resulting varieties often have very interesting and distinct flavors combining the flavors and qualities of these different stone fruits.
