Smith's Cider Apple
Malus domestica 'Smith's Cider'
Smith's Cider is a good apple for fresh eating, but is mainly used for cider making. It has a variably sized fruit that has a pale yellow skin with a greenish cast and carmin colored stripes and splashes.
Grafts of this variety were brought to Virginia during the Revolutionary War by Hessian soldiers before 1817.
A spreading, vigorous tree with straggling branches that bears early and fruits heavily. It has low chilling requirements and ripens in October, but does not keep well.
