Detroit Red Apple
Malus domestica 'Detroit Red'
The Detroit Red, not to be confused with the "Red Detroit" southern variety, is a classic deep red apple with thick skin that becomes a dark black-purple at maturity. Its soft, snow white flesh is a North Georgia favorite for sauces.
Introduced into the Detroit, Michigan area by early French Homesteaders. Well-groomed Detroit Red trees can be found growing today at Monticello, which Thomas Jefferson planted in 1805.
Bears young and annually with some disease resistance. Ripening begins in September, depending on location.
