Malus domestica 'Akane'

Akane is an late summer/ early fall apple that resembles Jonathan. It is medium in size, bright red in color, and its white flesh has a distinctive aroma and sub-acid flavor. It is an excellent dessert apple.

Alternate Names:  Prime Red, Tokyo Rose

 

Akane was bred in Japan and introduced into the US.  It is also known as Prime Red in the US and in Japan it was known as the Tohuko #3 cultivar.

Akane is less vigorous than most apple trees, with a slightly upright growth habit. It can tend to be a shy bearer and is reported to be less susceptible to scab than many other varieties.
