Pitmaston Pineapple Apple

Malus domestica 'Pitmaston Pineapple'

Pitmaston Pineapple is well named.  The small fruit have a distinct pineapple flavor to them.  The fruit is larger than the typical edible crab, golden yellow in color covered with a fine bronzy russeting.  The fruit is juicy, crunchy, with a sugary pineapple-like flavor.  It is typically used for fresh eating.  It has a compact upright growing habit, and ripens in mid-September.

Pitmaston Pineapple may be a seedling of Golden Pippin.  It originated near Pitmaston, England around 1785.

Many heirloom varieties have some natural resistance to apple scab and other diseases, since they were often discovered and grown well before fruit growers started to use chemicals for disease control.  However, you may still want to be vigilant about fire blight, apple scab, and other fungal diseases and spray when the need arises.  Protect from insect damage like normal.
