Malus domestica Haas - Haas Apple

Haas Apple

Malus domestica 'Haas'

Haas is an old-time variety with medium large, conical fruit that is slightly ribbed.  It has greenish-yello skin with some varied red striping.  The white flesh is juicy and tender, and sometimes has some red bleeding under the skin.  It stores well and ripens in October.

Alternate Names:  Fall Queen, Hoss, Maryland Queen

Haas is sometimes confused with Horse Apple, but it is a distinct variety.  It originated in Missouri in the 1870s.

Many heirloom varieties have some natural resistance to apple scab and other diseases, since they were often discovered and grown well before fruit growers started to use chemicals for disease control.  However, you may still want to be vigilant about fire blight, apple scab, and other fungal diseases and spray when the need arises.  Protect from insect damage like normal.
