Esopus Spitzenburg is a connoisseurs delight with medium to large, round, orangish red fruits.  The skin is tough and has russety dots and hard to see stripes.  The flesh is juicy, crisp, fine grained and yellow with a spicy, aromatic flavor which improves with storage.  It ripens unevenly from October through November, but keeps well in storage through spring.

Alternate Name:  Esopus, Spitzenburg

Esopus Spitzenburg was introduced around 1790 from Esopus, New York.  It has always been written that it was Thomas Jefferson's favorite apple.

Esopus Spitzenburg is susceptible to fire blight, scab and canker.  It has long, willowy limbs and can tend to bear biennially.  It requires good pollination.
