Malus domestica Ginger Gold® - Ginger Gold® Apple

Ginger Gold® Apple

Malus domestica 'Ginger Gold®'

Ginger Gold® is an early golden-type apple that ripens in the summer, late in August- early September. It very much resembles a Golden Delicious, but has a more spicy flavor than Golden. The fruit is medium-large and firm and crisp. It is probably the best golden-type apple in this early season.

Ginger Gold® is also known as the Mountain Cove cultivar. It was discovered as a chance seedling in a Winesap orchard in Virginia in 1980. Many excellent varieties of fruit are discovered as chance seedlings, trees that grow from seeds from drop fruit or other seedlings that grow from fruit or seedling rootstocks. Save and plant your seeds, and you "might" have something new also, but the chances of a real "winner" are slim--- just like the lottery!

Ginger Gold® is a fairly vigoorous trees that bears early and regularly. It blooms mid-to late season with Golden Delicious. Thin agressively early in the season for size and to insure next years crop. Ginger Gold® has a reputation for being very fire blight susceptible when young and growing vigorously, but less so when it settles down and starts fruiting on a regular basis.
