Nittany Apple
Malus domestica 'Nittany'
Nittany is a variety very similar to York Imperial, and is an excellent cooking and processing apple like York, but without the corking problem that York has. The flesh is yellowish and doesnot oxidize easily. The fruit is large and attractive, with an orange-red color. It is a late bloomer, but can be used as a pollinator for mid- to late season bloomers. Ripens late in the season in October. A good keeper.
Nittany was introduced by the University of Pennsylvania as an alaternative to York and its sports.
Nittany needs to be thinned hard so as to not set too heavy a crop and become biennial. The tree is vigorous and productive, and susceptible to fire blight.
