Lodi Apple

Malus domestica 'Lodi'

Lodi is an older variety that was introduced to replace Yellow Transparent, which it resembles somewhat in appearance and season. It is a good early season apple for pies and sauces, but as a dessert apple it tends to be very tart and has been known to have given many a young boy a "belly ache" when picked too early It is a better keeper than Yellow Transparent and is more firm.

Malus domestica 'Lodi'
Homeowner Growing and Maintenance Tips

Lodi is a very vigorous tree that will tend to set very heavy crops. If not thinned heavily and early in the season, fruit will not gain good size and the tree may not set fruit buds for the next year. Proper thinning will help combat this alternate bearing tendency. Lodi is very susceptible to fire blight and scab.

A Little History about Lodi Apple

Lodi was bred and introduced by the Geneva Experiment Station as an improvement over Yellow Transparent, which is one of its parents. Grandpa grew Lodi for many years, and thought it was better than Yellow Transparent, but still it was a different critter. Because it was very tart, he often got belly aches from eating them too soon. Many people still like Lodi, but Grandpa switched to Earligold(TM) which was a much better variety later.
