Prairie Spy is an attractive Northern Spy-type apple.  It has large fruit that are red over a yellow background.  The fruit is very crisp, juicy, and have an excellent flavor.  It can be used for most purposes.  It stores well for several months and the flavor improves with storage.  The tree is very hardy, vigorous , and productive.  It bears earlier than Northern Spy.  It is a late bloomer, and suitable for frostier locations.  An excellent alternative to Northern Spy for the backyard!

A Little History about Prairie Spy Apple

Prairie Spy was developed at the University of Minesota and introduced in 1940.  Although is exact heritage is unknown, Northern Spy is likely one of its parents.
