Avalon Pride Peach

Avalon Pride Peach

Prunus persica 'Avalon Pride'

Grandpa's Nature's Friendly™ is a peach leaf curl resistant variety, so if you are not able or don't want to spray for leaf curl, this is an excellent choice. Avalon Pride is similar in appearance to Redhaven. It produces medium to large fruit with prominent red blush and a superior eating quality. It ripens slightly ahead of Redhaven, so may still cling to the pit somewhat.

Homeowner Growing and Maintenance Tips

Almost all peaches are self-fertile and require no pollinators. They will set heavy crops on single trees, which need heavy and aggressive thinning early in the season for best fruit size. Maintain good vigor in peaches by pruning every year, and fertilizing moderately. Aim for 1-3 feet of new growth a year. Fertilize early in the season, so that growth is well hardened off before fall and winter cold weather.

A Little History about Avalon Pride Peach

Avalon Pride originated in Western Washington State and is also known as Croft cultivar. Peach leaf curl is a common disease of peaches that strikes early in the spring just as the leaves are coming out. If not controlled it can debilitate the tree and sometimes result in lost crops, leaves, and low vigor. It is easily controlled with copper sprays, but natural resistance to leaf curl is not common.
