Grandpa's Choice Hard Cidre Apple Orchard

Malus domestica 'Assorted Hard Cidre Apple Collections'

When Grandpa was out selling trees to his commercial grower friends, many of them made a little hard cider. Of course, Grandpa wouldn't refuse a "taste" because it would have been rude! But, of course, the hard cidre connoisseur knows that there is "hard cider" and there is "hard cidre"!

Grandpa's Orchard has started to collect and propagate some hard cidre varieties based on the recommendations of his true hard cidre maker friends. We'd like to share with you.

Varieties like:
Binet Rouge, Bramley's Seedling, Brown Snout, Brown Thorn, Brown's Apple, Caville Blanc, Cox Orange Pippin, Domaines, Ellis Bitter, Spitzenburg, Golden Noble, Golden Russet, Kingston Black, Noel des Champs, Roxbury Russet, Sweet Coppins, Tramlett's Bitter, and others.

Most we have on full dwarf BUD 9 rootstock, because we know it doesn't take a lot to flavor your base. Some on other semi-dwarf roots. We'll make sure that it is a good assortment. We don't have enough trees and time to list them all separately on Grandpa's Orchard at this time. If you want one in particular, let us know and we will try to accomodate your wishes.

Our choice of varieties, but you tell us the rootstocks you would like.

Plant and care for them, and in a few years, you will start being pleasantly surprized by the different apples that they will provide.

Bon Voyage! You are about to embark on a trip of discovery! Not a drunken trip we hope though!

Homeowner Growing and Maintenance Tips

Since we can't predict which varieties you may be getting, treat all of them with great care. Some may be more scab and disease resistant than others, but for the first few years maintain and grow them carefully until you know for sure.

A Little History

Grandpa never did make too much hard cider. He relied on his friends for a jug or two. But he knows that for the real cidre connoiseur, it can't all be made out of just one variety of apple. That's why cidre makers have been selecting varieties for sweetness, bitterness, sharpness, etc. so that they can get just the right mix for their own taste buds.
