Maggot Barriers for Apple, Pears, and other fruit

Z-Maggot Barriers

Maggot Barriers are a new product Grandpa has learned about that he thinks is perfect for the backyard fruit grower. Around 300 should provide about enough barriers for a common semi-dwarf tree if the fruit is properly thinned out to achieve good size.

There are now two grades available---
Regular Maggot Barriers come 288 per bag and are effective against most insects and apple maggot.
HEAVY Maggot Barriers come 144 per bag and are reported to provide more protection from Codling Moth and Oriental Fruit Moth.

There are many burrowing insects, like apple maggot, codling moth, oriental fruit fly, etc. that will burrow into growing fruit and eventually ruin the fruit. Often you don't know of the infestation until it is too late, and the insects are already doing their damage.

Chemical controls for these kinds of insects are expensive and have to be applied often. Knowing when to properly time applications of insecticides to control these insects is challenging even for commercial growers of fruit. Also, some of the chemicals and insecticides used are harsh, expensive, and often the insect becomes resistant to the insecticide over time.

While, we haven't tested this yet ourselves, we think that it has a lot of potential for the backyard fruit grower because it is non-toxic, non-chemical, won't inpact the environment, and we think would be quite effective in combatting fruit burrowing insects, which we know are a real problem for you to control. The manufacturer reports that some commercial growers in Washington have trialed them and are very impressed.

Apply the barriers to small fruitlets early in the season and leave on until harvest or close to harvest. They will expand with the growth of the fruit and create a physical barrier to insect infestation. Let us know your experiences with Maggot Barriers.

Maggot Barriers can ship with trees or if separately, we will adjust the shipping charges.  Usually one bag will ship Priority Mail for $5.00, two or more bags UPS for approximately $10.

A Little History about Maggot Barriers for Apple, Pears, and other fruit

Codling moth, apple maggot, oriental fruit moth and other insects will infest young fruits throughout the season and burrow through the skin or often infest the interior of the fruit through the calex (blossom) end of apples and pears, where there is a natural opening. These are serious pests of commercial fruit growers, and even they have difficult times controlling them with chemical insecticides. For backyard fruit growers they can ruin a summer's worth of work and waiting!
